Oncologists speak out against antioxidants ( ? ? ? )

Dear Friend, Many oncologists are now they're telling their cancer patients to stop taking antioxidants while they're undergoing treatment. Why? Because they're saying there's chance that antioxidant supplements could be lowering the effectiveness of cancer treatments like radiation treatment and chemotherapy. Give me a break. This makes me so angry, I'm not even sure where to start.
But I'll start with oncologists, those practitioners of the dangerous quack medicine known as chemotherapy. I've been outspoken against this barbaric and often useless practice for years. Chemotherapy attacks and kills not just cancer, but it also blunts the body's immune system in the bargain. While this extreme treatment has been effective against testicular cancers and lymphocytic leukemia, there's little doubt that in many cases it's hard to tell which the "therapy" will kill first -- the cancer or the patient. In spite of what you might have been told or believe, chemotherapy is hardly the exact science that it pretends to be. And yet, on the mere hunch that antioxidants could be protecting the cancer cells that chemotherapy seeks to destroy, oncologists seem perfectly comfortable telling their patients to layoff the antioxidant supplements.
Now I've hardly been the only one to sing the praises of the amazing benefits of antioxidants. And there are indeed many pro-antioxidant docs out there who claim that they may even boost the affect of chemo and radiation therapies. Even the author of the study claiming that antioxidants are having a negative impact on these cancer treatments admits that there's just not enough data for a definitive answer. But this hasn't stopped oncologists like Gabriella D'Andrea of New York's Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center from telling her patients to avoid all supplements during their course of treatment. Since these antioxidant supplements are so damaging to chemo and radiation treatments -- so much so that not even the scant few milligrams found in a daily vitamin should be taken -- surely oncologists must recommend that their patients also avoid all foods rich in antioxidants, right? Wrong. "People ask me, 'What should I eat?'," D'Andrea says. "And we just don't know." I find it unnerving that an oncologist like D'Andrea -- heck, ANY doctor -- could have so little proof and yet so much absolute conviction that she's in the right. It's shocking. D'Andrea's closed mind just re-enforces my already poor view of oncologists and their wrong-headed -- and unproven -- methods.

Monsanto Targets Public Radio to Spread False Biotech Messages

ad that recently ran during the American Public Media show Marketplace, sponsored by Monsanto, the world’s largest corporate agribusiness chemical firm, touted how Monsanto’s genetically modified (GM) seeds are going to save the world from environmental catastrophe and human hunger.
The Monsanto ads are, quite simply, false. The premise of the ad is that Monsanto’s GM seeds are going to save the world from environmental catastrophe and human hunger, but the reality of Monsanto’s seeds and the company’s ethics and commitment to fighting world hunger have little to do with either.
Eighty-five percent of all GM seeds are engineered for herbicide tolerance, most of these being Monsanto’s “Roundup Ready” cotton, corn, soy, and canola seeds. This allows plants to withstand significant amounts of pesticides being sprayed on it, in effect promoting pesticide use. As a result, there has been an increase in pesticide use in the United States since the introduction of GM seeds. Since the introduction of GM crops in the United States, more than 120 million pounds of additional pesticides were used.
At the same time, not a single GM crop has been commercially introduced that is intended to increase yield. Agronomists and plant scientists made far greater advances in yields through conventional breeding methods than they ever have with GM crops. In fact, there have been several studies which show that there are actually yield losses associated with Monsanto’s Roundup Ready soybeans. GM crops are not feeding the world, and they are not enabling us to produce more.
Monsanto wants you to believe their crops are feeding hungry children in Africa, and that they are allowing farmers to use fewer chemicals. But their actions demonstrate that their concern lies solely in their profits.Sources:

Hydroxycut Recall Alert

FDA Approves Deadly Antidepressant for Children

Is the FDA insane or just stupid? Barely a month after the U.S. Department of Justice sued Forest Labs, maker of blockbuster and potentially suicide-inducing antidepressant Lexapro, for illegally marketing the drug for children when it wasn't approved for use in children, the idiots at the FDA approved this highly dangerous drug for use in…you guessed it….children. Hopefully, doctors won't be stupid enough to prescribe it to children in the newly approved 12-to-17-year-old population, or to kids even younger. But we can't count on that – especially considering that the DOJ suit alleges that the Big Pharma firm essentially bribed doctors to prescribe the drug to kids. Bottom line: If your child is depressed, Lexapro could send them over the edge to suicide. If your doctor recommends this dangerous drug for your child, walk out of his office and find a new doctor immediately.

Spain Withdraws Gardasil After Illnesses

Spanish health authorities have withdrawn tens of thousands of doses of Gardasil, a vaccine against the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV), after two teenagers who received the shots were hospitalized.The two girls were vaccinated last week as part of a vast government program targeting adolescents. A batch of nearly 76,000 doses of the vaccine has been withdrawn from the market.The vaccine has been available since 2006.Sources:

The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), which was co-founded by Barbara Loe Fisher, one of the top vaccine experts in the world, is now calling for the CDC and FDA to publicly release the study design, data, and names of principal investigators involved. To not properly evaluate the risks of Gardasil, they say, is “a callous disregard for human life.” As Fisher said:
“Parents of young girls and women cut down in their prime -- some of them paralyzed or dead within hours or days of getting Gardasil vaccine -- deserve better answers than a whitewashing of this vaccine’s very serious side effects.”On NVIC’s Web site, you can read several stories of women and girls who have been seriously injured, and in some cases died, shortly after receiving this vaccine.

ADHD drugs causing frightening hallucinations in kids

You know by now where I stand on drugs like Ritalin for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – if I could physically go into millions of American homes and remove these drugs from folks' medicine cabinets, I would. ADHD has become the "designer diagnosis" of the past decade, and up to 8 percent of all kids have been diagnosed with it at some point or another. Most of them end up on a prescription drug. I don't have the space here to tell you about all the side effects that come with these drugs… suffice to say, they run the gamut from irregular heartbeats to anxiety and weight loss. But there's a new side effect researchers have uncovered that's cause for serious concern – hallucinations. A government study that looked at past trials on Ritalin, Concerta and Strattera found that these drugs were sometimes causing frightening hallucinations in kids, who in some cases thought they were seeing bugs and snakes. Is there anything more frightening to kids than bugs and snakes? Kids are unnecessarily being put on drugs that make it seem like their worst fears are coming true. The researchers were quick to point out that the side effects only occurs in rare cases. I'm sure it wouldn't seem like such a small issue if it was your kid or grandkid, though. ADHD is criminally over-diagnosed, and the drugs that treat it are unconscionably over- prescribed. While every kid on an ADHD drug hasn't seen bugs and snakes, these drugs have unleashed other side effects on more children than we can count. If your kids or grandkids are taking Ritalin, Concerta or Strattera, do them a huge favor – get a second opinion.

Alaska Employees Get Vaccine Ultimatum

Employees at Providence Alaska Medical Center no longer have a choice as to whether or not they receive a flu vaccine. The hospital is requiring all employees to get flu shots by year's end or face dismissal.
The new policy is controversial, especially among nurses. Many nurses don't want to be forced to get a shot that carries health risks of its own and doesn't always work, according to the nurses' union.
Nationally, fewer than half of health care workers receive flu vaccines. Before this year at Providence, about 40 percent of employees were vaccinated.
The nurses' union has filed a grievance protesting the policy.

Prescription Drugs More Likely to Kill You than Recreational Drugs
The number of reports of serious problems, including deaths, linked to medications hit a record in the first three months of this year.
The FDA received nearly 21,000 reports of serious drug reactions, including over 4,800 deaths, over that period. Two drugs accounted for a disproportionately large share of the problems -- heparin, a tainted blood thinner from China that caused an international safety scandal, and Chantix, a new anti-smoking drug from Pfizer.
Chantix had the most reports of any medication. Earlier this year, the FDA warned that Chantix may be linked to psychiatric problems, including suicidal behavior.
Serious drug reactions are ones that cause hospitalization, require medical intervention, or place a life in jeopardy. The total of 20,745 cases reported from January to March was 38 percent higher than the average for the previous four calendar quarters, and the highest for any quarter. Fatalities accounted for 23 percent of the cases.

Prominent Scientist Warns of HPV Vaccine Dangers

Independent health researcher Grace Filby, who won a Churchill Fellowship for her research into phage therapy, is calling on the government for more research into the possible side-effects of the HPV vaccine that is currently being given to teenage girls. Filby believes that not enough is known about the effects of the vaccine on children with pre-existing medical conditions and weakened immune systems. She says, "We simply do not know whether the vaccine interacts with other medication or medical conditions, and the manufacturers have not studied it yet. This could be a very valid reason why some families and schools might hesitate or opt out." She has this week written to UK education ministers and health officials calling for urgent small-scale independent studies that would highlight any health problems stemming from vaccinations already carried out.
